Russellville Multi Purpose Facility

Russellville Multi-Purpose Facility

The Russellville School District’s Multi-Purpose Facility is a pre-fabricated metal building that houses an indoor turf training area, weight room, locker rooms, coaches offices, training rooms, meeting rooms, and a player’s lounge. VHC had no recordable accidents during this project, which occurred during the period in which the company earned Associated Builders and Contractor's (ABC) Diamond STEP Award. ABC also awarded VHC with a 2019 Excellence in Construction Award for Pre-Engineered Buildings.

Project Origin and Community Response

Conversations surrounding the need for an indoor training facility began as early as 2014 among leaders in the Russellville School District. Stakeholders recognized a need for the facility as the result of an increased focus on student-athlete health and a reevaluation of training processes that occur during intense weather conditions, such as those practiced in the summer months. A permanent indoor training space allows for efficient shifts between indoor and outdoor practice activities and provides a safer training environment for students and coaches.
Additionally, the school district hoped to provide its students with the equipment and training opportunities necessary to ensure that Russellville athletic programs remain competitive with other schools in their classification. Recent projects from VHC and the Russellville School District have set the standard for athletic facilities in the Arkansas River Valley, and the MultiPurpose Facility provides exception training facilities for a number of student organizations at Russellville High School.

Van Horn Construction was selected by the Russellville School District as construction manager and general contractor for the project, and Bob Hiegel Architects was selected as the architect. In order to accomplish the district’s goals, VHC performed a number of preconstruction services, including cost estimating, value analysis, scheduling, constructability review, bid package development, design support, and cultivation of supplier and sub-contractor interest. VHC personnel met frequently with district representatives to reach final decisions.

Facility Overview

The 55,000 square feet facility is located to the northeast of Cyclone Stadium on a previously empty lot. This location allowed for a bridge and sidewalk to be built in order to connect the stadium to the Multi-Purpose Facility and grant easy access for students and coaches. The facility is framed by a variety of trees and green spaces that are synonymous with the Arkansas River Valley.
Inside the facility, visitors find a turf room, a state-of-the-art weight and training facility, a medical trianing room, coaches offices, multiple locker rooms, dual filming platforms, and designated meeting spaces.
The sheer size of the turf room is one of the facility’s most notable features. The room allows for a 50-yard field and end zone, plus a separate track and field training area that includes six running lanes and a pole vault lane with a landing pad. The above consideration makes the facility suitable for a number of student organizations, including football and soccer teams, as well as track and field athletes.
