Safety Director

The safety director works with senior management to develop and implement policies, procedures and programs that ensure the safety of all employees and meet or exceed the requirements of OSHA and other regulatory agencies. The safety director must have a broad knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and be familiar with all relevant environmental rules and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Construction Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent safety certification is required
  • 2 or 4 year college degree; occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combinations of training and related experience
  • 10 years minimum relative construction safety experience
  • OSHA 30 HR required; OSHA 500 course certification preferred
  • Must possess strong communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to work well with others
  • Ability to train and educate others

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to twist, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, walk on uneven ground, work above ground on scaffolds, have depth perception to avoid excavation and other hazards, hear audible horns and sirens on moving equipment, and have good finger dexterity. Must be able to lift 25 – 50 pounds on occasion and sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Work in extreme weather may be required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and maintain a continuously improving safety program
  • Maintain Van Horn Construction as a leader in safety performance
  • Ensure the VHC safety policy and programs are implemented consistently to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment
  • Establish training and development programs
  • Ensure that all employees receive the appropriate training to perform their work safely
  • Serve as safety liaison to owner representatives, subcontractors, and OSHA
  • Represent VHC in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Manage investigations of accidents that result in recordable injuries or major equipment or property damage and produce reports for management review
  • Attend industry training in order to keep safety certifications current and stay updated on safety and environmental best practices
